The Fear Of The Future.

Life after studying A Creative Arts Course.

Life as a University Student comes with so much fun. You know, being young enough to remain care free yet still old enough to realise that the prospects of what your future holds lingers on the back of your mind every now and again.

From moving out of your parent's house, settling down in a commited relationship with 'the one', to what in the world am I going to do post my graduation? Will my hard earned degree get me the dream job? Has it all been a waste of time?

In an ever so changing climate of Job Security and Opportunites, The market would seem to be tougher for students studying very Practical and hands on courses in the field of Creative Arts.

See, in a way these courses prep you for the harsh realities of the world in terms of letting you become aware that the portfolio you build during your time on the course has to be strong enough for when the battle begins post grad. You are aware that the competition is fierce , you are aware on whether your skills translate well to the practical aspect of what your'e studying.

It's not about memorising theories and going over your revision notes to ensure you have the answer for an exam question but rather, it's about how confident are you in your ability to speak in front of an audience, your ability to lead a crowd , your ability to network with other professionals , your ability to become the master of your equipment in high stake situations.

FROM STUDENT TO FREELANCE... AND IF SO, FOR HOW LONG?

'Just over half of creative arts graduates worked in full-time roles, around 10% lower than the overall average. However, almost a quarter (22.8%) worked in part-time roles, significantly higher than other disciplines (average 10.4%). Creative arts graduate unemployment remained consistent with the overall average (approximately 5%).

The number of creative arts graduates developing a creative portfolio (9.2%), running their own business (2.3%) or self-employed/freelancing (9.9%) far exceeded the numbers in other subjects (21.5% compared to 6.8%).

Fewer creative arts graduates went on to further study (4.5%) or were working and studying (8.6%) than the overall average (7.8% and 10.5% respectively).' (Firth, 2023)

IT'S NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM ...... Maybe?

Job opportunities across the UK, also seem to be on the decline. And yet ironically, as a society, the UK continues to develop and digitalise. So maybe this is the issue. Maybe traditional Jobs as we know it are fading away. There are more social media influencers in the world right than there's ever been. The digital world is filled with many dilligent/honest opportunities and ways to earn and I'm talking across all platforms from X to Tik Tok and maybe just maybe this is the ideal time to be studying a creative arts course that equips you with the skill set to be on top of your game in this ever so changing digitalised world.
